Overdue Personal Update
In case you hadn’t noticed, I’ve relaunched Sport Bucket, and just about everything that goes along with it. In addition to the blog section you’re currently reading, there’s my design portfolio, a gratuitous about me page, and of course the new front page, complete with theme music.
I’ve added a section to the right of the main blog page that contains links to things I’ve found interesting or useful. There were lots of times I wanted to post things like that to older incarnations of Sport Bucket, but there just wasn’t a section for it, so often I didn’t. This main column will remain devoted to longer, more original articles. As such, it won’t be updated every day or even every week, but I promise not to completely neglect it. The right column, on the other hand, will be updated much more frequently.
The first piece of substantial news is that I have moved away from the People’s Republic of Eugene to my hometown Portland, and I live several blocks from my old elementary school. In addition to scouting out design jobs and toying with the idea of taking Sport Bucket Design to the next level, I’ve been working at a neighborhood pub, slinging beers and various fried goods. The pub is right across the street from my old high school, so now I just need to find a Hooters a church near my old middle school.
Next, I was pleased to learn that one of my letterpress posters was awarded an Addy by the American Advertising Federation. OK, that sounds way too important. The poster won due to the fantastic illustration by Bryce McCloud. The advertising copy was provided by Jeff Porter and Nelson Eddy of Dye, Van Mol & Lawrence. I just designed and typeset the lower portion of the poster, and I’m credited as “Hatch Show Print,” which is more than appropriate, though I’m the guy who did the typesetting and printing. Anyway, I was happy to hear the poster won an award. I guess that makes me an award-winning typesetter. I gotta find some way to exploit that.
Another announcement I’d like to make is that the band I’ve been playing with, Cabinessence, will be appearing live on KEXP (90.3 FM, Seattle) for an interview/performance this Saturday, August 13th. If you’re not in the area, you can even listen online. We’re pretty excited about it, not only because KEXP is a really cool radio station, but also because the current issue of Rolling Stone named the station the best in the Northwest. They also mentioned the Crocodile Cafe, which we’re playing on August 25th. Granted, we’re the fourth-billed band, but it’s better than nothing.
Anyway, welcome again to this new iteration of Sport Bucket Dot Com. Check back often.
