“Getting Better” Makes It Better

As discovered by my brother’s father-in-law, the Beatles’ song Getting Better is both a good listen and a great song to know when you’ve got some radio jingle or Aaron Neville song stuck in your head. Think of it as the ultimate palate-cleanser for your ears. If you’ve got a song stuck in your head, just sing (to yourself or out loud) the chorus to Getting Better:

I’ve got to admit it’s getting better;
A little better all the time
(Can’t get no worse)

And the song is gone. Guaranteed. There’s something about this song, about this vocal hook in particularly, that is catchy enough to dislodge anything that’s stuck in your head, but somehow manages to not get stuck there itself.

Try it out. Let me know if it works. It’s worked for everyone I’ve ever talked to about it, and I use it almost daily, because that Aaron Neville song is a sticky bastard. “I don’t know much… but I know I love you…” Makes me shudder. But I know how to make it better.
